Every generation inherits a record.
Every generation leaves one behind.
FOR THE RECORD
CREATED BY: DR. ANDREYA M. WILLIAMS
For the Record collects the stories we inherit and documents the ones we are making now.We collect the stories we inherit and document the ones we are making now through archival research, gathering, and commissioned work.
THE RECORD
WHAT WE INHERIT.
WHAT WE LEAVE BEHIND.
Every family has a record. So does every place. It lives in photographs, letters, objects, public archives, and stories passed from one person to another. Together, they tell us who was here, what they built, and what they believed was worth carrying forward. But the record is still being made. For the Record brings what has been preserved into conversation with the people shaping institutions, culture, and place today.
MAKING THE RECORD
The Stories.
The Builders.
The Commissions.
The record is not only what we find.
It is what we make.
We follow stories across archives, family histories, objects, photographs, and memory.
We gather the people building institutions, shaping culture, and stewarding places now.We commission photographers, filmmakers, writers, and artists to create new work from the people, stories, and places we encounter.
MARTHA'S
VINEYARD
Volume 01
For generations, Black people have come to Martha's Vineyard to gather, rest, build institutions, raise families, make culture, and imagine what might come next. For the Record began there.Volume 01 brought archival material and historical memory into conversation with contemporary Black institutional life. We gathered people shaping the present and commissioned photographer Chrys Davis to create a new portrait record of those building, leading, creating, and stewarding institutions now.
